It was on their way home that day that Lilli and Liam got their first glimpse of Miguel and Jason. At the time, Liam and Lilli didn’t know who they were, but they were sure who sent them. As they watched the strange men go through their cabin from their hiding place in the trees, Liam was grateful that he listened to his instincts that morning and hid their documents, the pictures his mother had given them, and the majority of their cash in the secret compartment in the floor of their truck. They won’t know to look there, he thought hopefully.

When the men finally left the cabin, they were so close that Lilli held her breath as she gripped Liam’s hand tightly. Beside her, Liam was frozen in place—watching, but ready to pounce. He knew this day would come and he was ready for it. He reached into the backside of his jeans and quietly unlatched the safety on his gun. They were no more than 40 feet away.

“Should we wait here for them?” Jason asked.

“No, the woman at the tackle place said that they were going fly fishing a little farther down the lake. Let’s try there. There’s only a few more hours of sunlight left. If they’re not there, then we can catch them coming home. They obviously didn’t take the truck.”

Jason nodded his assent as both men got into their black SUV and headed toward the trail Liam and Lilli had just left behind. Liam closed his eyes in relief, realizing that he never expected to be so grateful for Lilli’s rigid habit of watching Clueless reruns at 5:00 pm every day. If she hadn’t been so insistent that they leave the lake in time for her show, they would have stayed at the lake – stayed and died. They were packed up and out of the cabin in five minutes. Lilli left their dead fish on the bed, just so the stench would greet Miguel and Jason when they came back.

From there, they headed to New Mexico. It was a random choice that they made while playing a game. Liam picked a letter and Lilli picked a corresponding state, opened her US map, closed her eyes, and picked a city. When they arrived in Albuquerque, Liam insisted that Lilli enroll in school, noting with some relief that since his fake ID said that he was twenty, he didn’t have to.

“What are you going to do?” she pouted as Liam gave the school administrator Lilli’s fake transcript.

“I don’t know. Maybe get a GED. I had enough credits… maybe I could take some college courses.” Liam knew that his parents would never forgive him if he didn’t tend to their education. Whatever he did, he planned to stay close to Lilli.
